One of the hardest things I find with home education is (ironically) not teaching the girls the stuff they want to know, it’s actually trying to keep accurate enough records to be able to satisfy the authorities that we are actually doing what we are supposed to be doing. Finally, there is an app for homeschool recording. I’ve been spending a bit of time playing with it lately, and I’m here to tell you, I love it! It’s called AT3N.
A lot of my time is spent keeping a diary of what we do, which I used to do on a word document, and taking HEAPS of photos. Then at the required time, I have to sift through all that information and pick out the right photos to go with it. The HEU in Queensland only require you to write a page or so report on what you ended up achieving to accompany your work samples and my report would run into the 15 page mark. You just can’t sum it up in one page. BOSTES in NSW require you to address each of the outcomes, preferably showing when and how you achieved them. All of this can be really exhausting, time consuming, add to the stress of the year and influence how hard you push your kids to give you something to show! You know you’ve done enough but you have to be able to show it to THEM. There’s a certain amount of resentment involved, although we all try to look at the bright side and say, well at least it helps us see how much they’ve done!
The new app called AT3N does all of this with ease, and takes away so much of the stress of reporting that you can actually get back to the important stuff. Teaching your kids.
Basically you add your students and what grade you want them to study, then the outcomes for each subject are displayed. You simply choose an outcome, record some information, snap some photos and Bob’s your Uncle! At the end of the year it will print out your report saving you days or weeks of manual compilation. I love it. It’s especially great for us ‘unschoolers’ since we like to spend more time exploring life than recording and you always have your phone on you so you can’t miss a thing.
The developers at AT3N said the following:
“AT3N is a portfolio of certificates, reports and letters of achievements all at your fingertips. This organizational App allows you to track and record all academic achievements aligned with your selected curriculum including; certificates, images, notes, reports, year end transcripts and letters of achievements. Save all of these projects into a system that will reflect the hard work and comprehension they have achieved over the years.
Identify the gaps in your child’s education and fill them the way that suits you and your child best. Easy to edit and export to send away to schools, colleges or potential employers.”
It even helps you with your registration, a thorn in the paw of most homeschool parents, especially if it’s your first time.
About time someone made an app for that.
Check it out! The app is FREE on ITunes this weekend only so be quick!!! (7th, 8th November 2015)
