Well, it’s been way too long and clearly I’m no blogger but here is our latest news!
We spent the months of April and most of May in the USA visiting friends in Montana and California. Its a long flight so we decided to have a week in California on arrival to get over our jet lag and then fly on to Montana after some rest. Anyone who has young children knows how tiring it can be to fly long distance.
When we arrived a the LA airport after a flight from Cairns to Brisbane then waiting in Brisbane for a few hours then flight from Brisbane to LA, then immigration then Customs then we are in LA airport trying to find a hire car, etc, etc, it is understandable that to the uninitiated this can be a little too much to bare… The Skipper and I are of course seasoned travellers and expect the worst and hope for the best in all situations so we are ok when our luggage is the last on the queue and ok when the phone in LAX doesn’t work and ok when the pickup doesn’t arrive and so on and so on but we are also travelling with two little girls. Two little princesses that have been built up to this moment – the excitement is at fever pitch as we land in the plane and they aren’t really prepared for the crap that you have to go through before you go ‘ahhhh’ in your hotel room…
Swab, all of almost 4 years old, is doing pretty well after staying wide awake through the flight from Cairns to Brisbane and the waiting time in Brisbane International and the first 6 hours of the international flight because it started at 10am and why would she want to go to sleep at any point right? She is firing on all four cylinders for sure. Miss 6, our first mate, has watched a few movies by now, helped her little sister change the channel a few times, checked out the games and toilets a few times and now she’s getting bored. Boredom is great! As soon as they got bored the eyes began to droop and before you knew it they were both asleep and I was able to enjoy my first of two cocktails on this flight, ooh mama.
Anyway, as I said before, after we arrived, we were all so excited “you are finally here, finally in the United States, you are in America! ” blah, blah, blah… We got through immigration and having the children’s eyeballs photographed etc, etc and we are looking for our baggage etc, etc, trying not to run the children over with our two luggage trolleys because they kept running in front of them… and get into the arrival lounge at LAX and we are looking around and even though I have been here a hundred times before I STILL can’t believe that the arrival lounge is so crap an I’m looking around for some way to facilitate us getting a car and getting out of here and into our incredible hotel that is waiting for us in Newport Beach and I’m looking around and (Swab)Miss 4 says “Where is Tom and Liedeke????”.. And I look at her and try to think of the Mummy thing to say because clearly they aren’t going to be here, we aren’t going to see them until we fly to Montana in a few days after we get over our jet lag as discussed with her a million times, but yeah, she’s only 4, lol…. So gently I say “yes we are in LA honey and they live in Montana, we are just going to be here a few sleeps and then we get back on the plane to go to Montana” and she looks at me with those big brown eyes and says angrily “Well this is bullshit.”
Yes it is honey.
But I do love travel 🙂
